Welcome Dr. Garfield Hunter
Alpha Resources Ltd's New Chief Operating Officer
Alpha Resources Ltd. is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Garfield Hunter as our new Chief Operating Officer. Dr. Hunter brings over 12 years of diverse knowledge and leadership experience in social equity planning, housing, stakeholder partnership and co-creation, and higher education to our team, where he has workedto improve the lives of marginalized and equity-deserving communities.
Experiences
Dr. Hunter is a social impact executive leader who has successfully navigated complex institutional environments while consulting for international development agencies such as the Global Environment Facility and the European Union’s Erasmus Mundus Programme. He has also worked with and consulted for government agencies in Jamaica, including the Airport Authority of Jamaica, the Urban Development Corporation, the Jamaica Railway Corporation, and the National Environment and Planning Agency. In addition, Dr. Hunter has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Technology, Jamaica.
Most recently, Dr. Hunter served as the Education Director at the Co-operative Housing Federation of BC, where he led the integration of belonging and sustainability strategic priorities into the education program. He also spearheaded engagement projects for the DIVERSEcity Community Resource Society in Surrey to engage clients on the Province of British Columbia’s Anti-Racism Data Legislation. Furthermore, he has led a six-month community-based research project between tripartite non-profit partnerships (DIVERSEcity, Rainbow Refugee Society and MOSAIC), tackling housing precarity and instability for newcomers in Metro Vancouver.
He also collaborated with the Community Foundation of Canada as research support and co-author/co-contributor for the report “Equitable Infrastructure: A resource framing infrastructure types using an equitable placemaking lens." This work was geared towards the National Infrastructure Assessment:" Building the Canada We Want in 2050."
Education
Dr. Hunter holds a BSc. in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Technology, Jamaica, and a Ph.D. in Urban Planning and Public Policy from Tongji University in Shanghai. In 2022 he completed the Oxford Executive Leadership Programme at the Said Business School at the University of Oxford.
Interests
In his spare time, he rides his electric scooter touring urban neighborhoods, reads extensively, and considers himself a track and field enthusiast. He is a Board Member of the Rainbow Refugee Society in Vancouver.
The Future
Dr. Hunter is keen on designing and implementing policies to promote Alpha’s organizational culture and vision and oversees operations to optimize business efficiency. Guided by his career mantra,“collaborate to innovate,” he is keen on co-creation with Alpha’s staff, clients, and partners to build mutualistic relationships and achieve a sustainable and innovative business model. This is driven by his unique value proposition to utilize plain language communication to engage with diverse and complex stakeholders and decision-makers.
